David joined Thompson Jenner in September 2022 following his move from Hampshire to Devon.
Before the move David had worked with a variety of accountancy firms in the South East.
David gained his VAT knowledge firstly with HM Customs & Excise rising through the grades to Senior Advanced Accountancy Officer. David moved to KPMG where he was a VAT Manager and afterwards enjoyed a variety of roles including being self-employed.
David’s current role is the VAT specialist for Thompson Jenner dealing with VAT questions, either asked internally or directly from clients. The questions can be compliance related to completing VAT returns or the liability of transactions. David also gives VAT planning advice where there are different consequences depending upon how a transaction is structured.
David has supported clients facing an HMRC enquiry recently successfully removing an assessment of more than £200,000. In previous firms he also represented clients before the First Tier Tax Tribunal.
In addition to VAT, David advises on customs duty and import/export procedures. This includes help classifying products to make sure the duty rate is appropriate.
David is a generalist rather than a specialist in a specific area. However, he has a lot of engagement with charities, property firms, building contractors and importers/exporters.
David works across both our Exeter and Exmouth offices.
