New Companies House ID Checks: What they mean for you

15th June 2025

As part of the UK government’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on economic crime and increase corporate transparency, identity verification for directors and key company stakeholders is being rolled out by Companies House. While the process began earlier this year, it will soon become a legal requirement for many.

Who does this affect?

If you’re a company director, a person with significant control (PSC), or someone who files on behalf of a company, these changes apply to you.

What’s changed?

Since 8 April 2025, Companies House has been gradually introducing identity verification for individuals involved in setting up and running UK companies. This can be completed in one of two ways:

  • Through the government’s GOV.UK One Login, or
  • Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)—such as your accountant.

ACSPs have been able to register since March, and while the system is still in a transitional phase, ID checks will become mandatory later this year, expected to be from autumn 2025.

For existing companies, this requirement will form part of the confirmation statement process, meaning action will need to be taken at the next filing point.

Why it matters

These checks aim to increase transparency and ensure those running UK companies are who they say they are. Failure to verify when the new rules take full effect may result in delays to filings—or even action from Companies House.

How we can help

As an approved ACSP, we are authorised to carry out identity checks on your behalf. This provides several benefits:

  • Avoid GOV.UK logins and added admin
  • Streamlined checks across multiple directors and PSCs
  • Peace of mind that you’re compliant ahead of the legal deadline

There is a small administrative charge for this service: £50+VAT per UK-based director and £100+VAT per overseas director.

If you currently manage your own company filings or are unsure about how this affects your responsibilities, we’re here to help. Acting early can avoid last-minute stress and ensure your records stay up to date.

Get ahead of the deadline.
